Making Creativity Work on a Budget

(or without

a budget)

I enjoy listening to music in the background while I work on creative projects – favourite songs include: Ziggy Stardust by Bowie, Big Time by Neil Young with Crazy Horse, Cover You in Oil by AC/DC, Tupelo Honey by Van Morrison, Tiny Dancer by Elton John, Alike by Efterklang, Die by the Sword by Slayer, Da Funk by Daft Punk, Nothing Else Matters by Metallica, Fucking Hostile by Pantera, Crucify Your Mind by Rodriguez, Settle for Nothing by Rage Against the Machine, Home Land and Sea by Trinity Roots, Blinded by the Light by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, Time Bomb by Rancid, Glory Box by Portishead, Twist by Korn, Civil War by Guns N Roses, Let the Drummer Kick by Citizen Cope, Coming Home (unplugged in Buenos Aires) by Megadeth, Death of a Clown by The Kinks, Sail by Devildriver, Duality by Slipknot, I remember you by Skid Row, Wanted Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi, Natural by Imagine Dragons, Slow Your Roll by Everlast and The Dam at Otter Creek by Live.

Big fan of Rik Mayall, Bill Bailey and Steve Wrigley – comedians.

I have written, produced, art direction, storyboards, and DOP for 5 short movies shot on video. Mostly student projects, 3 x 1 day shoots, 1 x 5 week shoot. Re-edited 4 of them in 2013. I also directed all except the 5th but the footage was never recovered for that one – an untitled poltergeist movie with some pretty impressive cinematography and FX – I produced it and it was a major undertaking, loved every minute of it. All were shot on zero budgets with cheap handycams and a little stage lighting – burning a friend’s carpet at one point (I had to pay for damages – approx. $100 I learned my lesson about using outdoor lighting inside.) And I worked on 1 other short movie for the 48hr filmmaking competition as story writing supervisor and script co-writer (uncredited.) These projects were a huge learning process for me and I’m very excited about doing more micro-budget producing – especially for television. I’m writing micro-budget scripts and saving my pennies to make another short movie. I’m also learning animation. I produced the music (French A Capella) based on some of my lyrics for the soundtrack on my first two surviving short movies. Currently developing an animated music video based on my script and my lyrics. Writing a short movie and a number of screenplays to send to directors I like.

I’m keen to team up with a horror scriptwriter/producer to make short and feature micro-budget horror movies shot on video.

Mike’s Philosophy

Imagination is a powerful force; once wrangled can birth tremendous discovery and perspective on the lives we experience. Through understanding the best and the darkest moments that force themselves upon us, brilliant and believable solutions can be spun. The characters and the worlds I create come from this imagination, practiced by a history of writing since childhood and a lifetime of world travel— traversing the globe four times over. As a disciplined and tenacious writer, my work has spanned screenplays, stage plays, video games, software and tabletop games, non fiction, novels, animation, comic books and short stories— having realised first-hand the benefit of writing as a recovery and healing process, I take regular involvement in the mental health community; which has welcomed me as a friend and supporter for years. In addition to a formal degree in creative writing, a manuscript has won a mentorship sponsored by the New Zealand Society of Authors.

I am an experienced video editor and video producer, I can help you with your video projects, contact me below to enquire.

I have a degree in Screenwriting and have written several screenplays, some theatre and short movies as well as a TV pilot script which was well-received by TVNZ, but passed on due to budget constraints.

Through a one year Certificate at Aoraki Polytechnic, I gained experience making short movies on video – especially writing, directing, video editing and art department. As well as acting and producing for children’s theatre, learning the technical equipment for radio and television – (radio) programming shows, writing ads, promotional chores, interviewing, performing as a dj, using radio station mixing equipment, (television) operating the sound booth, and operating one of the stationary cameras at the tv station.
